About Kinnei's Capsule Closets

Kinnei's Capsule Closets is a women's slow fashion subscription box offering capsule wardrobes designed to fit a wider variety of body shapes than is found in ready to wear clothing. It was founded on the idea that clothes should fit, last, and be able to change with your body. New seasons come out twice a year.

My work is inspired by heirloom and historical fashion, clothes that were made to last years and sometimes lifetimes. I believe that protecting the planet starts long before a garment goes into a landfill. It begins by designing pieces that have good longevity and a low ecological impact. For this reason, I work in small batches and produce only what is ordered, using natural materials, because the best things in life take time.

My childhood was primarily lived in fantasy worlds from books and games. I also lived in Japan during some of my more socially formative years. These experiences shaped my aesthetics in lasting ways. My designs are influenced by Lolita, otome, and other J-fashion styles, alongside my love of fairy tales, Arabian Nights, and historical dress.

While these inspirations guide my work, I refuse to confine myself to a single fashion category or era. Each capsule explores a new theme, blending whimsy, practicality, and craftsmanship. Every style is unique and working in small batches lets me create styles as unique as the individuals who wear them. I was tired of needing a new wardrobe every few months as I became a mother, of buying something only for it never to be quite right or comfortable, of having to discard because of natural shape changes. This was my answer. I design with change in mind. I reject the idea of needing an entirely new wardrobe for pregnancy, nursing, or natural weight changes. Clothing should be made to fit the body and adapt to the wearer, not the other way round. For this reason, many of my designs include motherhood friendly features and size flexibility. I specialize in full-bust fits, height and shoulder differences, and wide seam allowances. While I offer a better fit than can be found in most ready to wear clothing, I encourage wearers to visit their local seamstress for alterations and adjustments to maintain a good fit and longevity. Supporting local seamstresses keeps clothing wearable for years.​

Why capsule wardrobes? Because when everything in your closet works together, styling becomes nearly endless and dressing becomes effortless.

 

Why a subscription box? Because they're fun. Receiving something you love in a predictable rhythm feels special. A subscription allows me to focus on design and craftsmanship while giving customers a curated experience that unfolds over time.
